Abstract:
Fear is a powerful emotion and fearful experiences carve indelible memories into the brain. When appropriate these fear memories serve to protect us against
environmental threats. But inappropriate fear memories lead to anxiety disorders, which have an astonishingly high prevalence. I will discuss the normal function
of fear, how the brain creates fear memories, why anxiety disorders have such prevalence and suggest how insights from neuroscience may lead to improved
treatments for these conditions.
