From the Space Race via the Moon to Peaceful Collaboration: A re-telling of humankind’s greatest adventure and what it can tell us today
Speaker: Henrik Syse
Philosopher, author & lecturer
Research Professor, Peace Research Institute Oslo
Professor, Oslo New University College
Abstract: In 1969, a human being walked on the moon for the very first time, less than 70 years after human beings first took flight. This remarkable event was part of a space race, which in turn was part of one of the most dramatic chapters of the Cold War. During this time, the Outer Space Treaty was drafted and signed. Shortly after the Americans walked on the moon and the Soviets mastered the art of the space station, the two rivals decided to work together – peacefully. In this lecture, Dr Syse will share some of the most exciting moments from the conquest of space in the 1960s and 1970s, and explore what we can learn when it comes to peaceful collaboration, both in space and on Earth, today.
