Abstract : The longer lifespans and altered lifestyles seem to be associated with the preponderance of diverse neurodegenerative disorders in recent times. n view of the unparalleled genetic resources and methodological advantages, Drosophila has been a very popular model for pre-clinical studies on a variety of inherited conditions that lead to neurodegeneration. Such studies have provided deep insights about the cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with the diverse neurodegenerative conditions, which may help in developing effective therapeutic approaches for their mitigation. Studies in fly and other models reveal that each of the neurodegenerative conditions impacts several different cellular pathways that disrupt the normal proteostasis in cells. Despite numerous studies, effective therapeutic interventions for the diverse neurodegenerative conditions are still not in sight.

This talk would summarize our lab’s studies on suppressive effects of down-regulation of the non-coding hsrω transcripts or of Hsp60D on expanded polyQ-induced neurodegeneration and of two Ayurvedic formulations (Amalaki Rasayana and Rasa-Sindoor) on polyQ or Alzheimer’s-associated neurodegeneration. Based on our results, these Ayurvedic formulations appear promising for therapeutic applications.

Brief Bio : Prof. Subhash Chandra Lakhotia, currently a life-long Distinguished Professor at the Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University and SERB Distinguished Fellow, has, during the nearly 55 years of active involvement in research, made significant and pioneering contributions in areas like dosage compensation, heterochromatin, chromosomal replication, long noncoding RNAs, stress biology, tumour biology, Ayurvedic biology etc, using the Drosophila model system. He has been actively involved in discussions on higher education, research publication policies, research ethics etc. Prof. Lakhotia, a fellow of all the three Science Academies in India, is recipient of the INSA YS medal, the SS Bhatnagar Prize and other prestigious awards and recognitions for his research work.
