The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has established the Foundation for QC Innovation (FQCI) as a Section 8 not-for-profit company, under the National Quantum Mission (NQM) implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. FQCI serves as the DST-NQM Quantum Computing Thematic Hub (QC T-Hub) at IISc, one of the four Thematic Hubs established under NQM.
FQCI is focused on strengthening India’s quantum computing capabilities by bringing together academic institutions, researchers, industry, and startups to advance research, technology development, infrastructure creation, talent development, and technology translation. Its research and technology development efforts span multiple quantum computing approaches, including photonic, superconducting, semiconducting, silicon-spin, neutral-atom and trapped-ion systems, alongside quantum algorithms.
“The National Quantum Mission provides a unique opportunity to build a strong and globally competitive quantum computing ecosystem in India. At FQCI, our focus is on bringing together India’s research capabilities, advanced infrastructure, industry, and entrepreneurial talent to translate cutting-edge research into indigenous quantum computing technologies and applications. We aim to create an ecosystem where fundamental research, technology development, and real-world applications progress together,” says Shankar Kumar Selvaraja, Project Director, FQCI and Professor, Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE), IISc.
FQCI is also working towards creating shared, world-class infrastructure for quantum device fabrication, characterisation, testing, and technology development, supporting the translation of research into functional technologies and strengthening India’s indigenous capabilities.
Beyond research and infrastructure, FQCI is developing the human and entrepreneurial ecosystem required for a quantum-ready India. Its initiatives support student research and internships, advanced research, industry-academia collaboration, startup development, knowledge exchange, and public outreach. Flagship programmes include QC RISE, QC BRIDGE, QC LEAP, QC ACCEL, and QC QUEST.
Through its role as the Quantum Computing Thematic Hub under NQM, FQCI aims to foster a strong, globally competitive and innovation-driven quantum computing ecosystem in India, while contributing to the development of scalable and indigenous quantum technologies and their future applications across research, industry, and society.
