Abstract:

Digital manufacturing is broadly understood as applying computer systems to product development, manufacturing processes, and supply chains supporting products and processes. Of late, the verb associated with this has come under scrutiny, and the stakeholders are beginning to distinguish between digitizing (current art) and digitalizing(proposed). This talk will first make the distinction between the two and build upon the hypothesis that digitalization of manufacturing is the new goal. Digitalization of manufacturing will be addressed in the context of product development and delivery, smart manufacturing, and infrastructure to support manufacturing and the product post-delivery. Data-driven models that are increasingly emerging as a tool to address the lack of formal models will be introduced, and problems in their use to digitalize manufacturing discussed.
