ADITYA BIRLA

Council in its meeting held on 23rd June 2001 approved the institution of Aditya Birla Chair in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Institute.

The Chair was instituted by the Indian Aluminium Company, Calcutta, by contributing `30/- lakhs as corpus for the said purpose.  The Chair would be offered to an eminent Scientist/Researcher/Technologist of internal recognition/reputation from within the country or abroad.  The incumbent of the chair is expected to interact with Aluminium industries in India to promote Industry-Institute interaction and promote relevant research at the Institute relating to Aluminium.

Currently, the Chair carries with it an honorarium ranging from ` 1.5 to 2.0 lakhs p.m. (fixed) besides Business Class return airfare  ORtwo Economy Class airfare.  Guest House accommodation on payment basis.

ALUMNI

The Governing Council of the Institute in its meeting held on 23rd March 2001 approved the institution of ‘Alumni Chair’ at the Institute by the Indian Institute of Science Alumni Association with an original corpus of ` 11.0 lakhs. The Visiting Chair is open to the Alumni of the Institute who are working in reputed institutions in India and abroad and is for a period of 3 months every year.

Currently, the Chair carries with it an honorarium ranging from ` 1.5 to 2.0 lakhs p.m. (fixed) besides Business Class return airfare  ORtwo Economy Class airfare.  Guest House accommodation on payment basis.

BRAHM PRAKASH

Prof. BrahmPrakash Chair  Was instituted during 1989 with a corpus of `10.00 lakhs.  This chair was created in the memory of late Prof. BrahmPrakash, who served as the Chairman of the Department of Metallurgy at the Institute and also made major contributions to India’s atomic energy and space programmes.

SUNDARARAJAN

The Council at its meeting held on 10th October 1998, approved the proposal for institution of ‘Sundararajan Visiting Chair’ at the Institute.

An amount of US $ 100,000 (` 42.32 lakhs) was contributed by Dr. E S Purandara Das for instituting this endowment.   At that time, it was decided to meet the expenditure incurred towards honorarium, contingency, travel etc. out of the earnings of the investment of the corpus.

Currently, the Chair carries with it an honorarium ranging from ` 1.5 to 2.0 lakhs p.m. (fixed) besides Business Class return airfare  ORtwo Economy Class airfare.  Guest House accommodation on payment basis.

The Chairs are of two types – one of Long duration (about a year) and the other of Short duration (few weeks to a few months).

PRATT & WHITNEY in Gas Turbine Engineering:

This chair was instituted by M/s. United Technologies Corporation, Pratt & Whitney Division in July 2008 with an endowment of 1.5 lakh US $ (equivalent to Rs. 63,93,579) in the Department of Aerospace Engineering to strengthen the Gas Turbine Research initiative.  Currently, the offer will be made for period of one-two months.

DST-IISc CENTENARY CHAIR PROFESSORSHIP

 The Professorship will be valid for 2 years from the date of first visit by the Professor (Professor is expected to spend normally a minimum period of two months).  The IISc-DST Centenary Chair Professor will interact with the faculty and students of the Institute, forge enhanced levels of research collaboration and streamline growth of new areas of research at the Institute.

Shorter visits of about one month will be decided on mutually agreed terms between the Institute and the Professor.

SMT. RUKMINI – SHRI GOPALAKRISHNACHAR DISTINGUISHED CHAIR PROFESSORSHIP OF IISc

RukminiGopalakrishnachar Chair was instituted during 2007 by  Shri. D.N. Prahlad, an alumnus with a corpus of ` 1.0 crore.  This chair is open to renowned Scientists in Science or Engineering from across the globe.

The Visiting Professorship Chair will be offered for a period ranging from 1- 6 months and the awardee will have to spend at least a month continuously at IISc., interacting with the faculty/students.

INFOSYS VISITING CHAIR

The Infosys Foundation has endowed Visiting Professorships in Mathematics and Physics at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
